Earning Extra Money

Filed in: Home Business by Alfredo on 11-13-09

There are numerous legitimate online job opportunities out there on the ‘net that can be used for earning extra money. Unfortunately, for every legitimate offering you stumble across, you’re likely to find 8-10 scam sites promising good results, but due to their nature, or various structural problems inherent in their design, failing spectacularly at delivering any sort of income.

Bear in mind that while most of these offerings do all they can to hype the amount of money you can make, your actual results will most often fall short of the ideal they present you with.

I’m not trying to dissuade you from making the attempt, only pointing out that you need to keep your income expectations in check, and while these offerings can bring in a steady stream of income for you, in the overwhelming number of cases, the amount you make will be akin to a part time job, rather than something you can quit your day job for. Still, if you have a need for some specific amount of money, these various offerings can be used to good, if somewhat limited effect.

In this article, we’ll focus on two types of online opportunities, and try to help you evaluate if they’re right for you (or convince you to stay away!)

PTC (Pay to Click) Advertising Sites
PTS (Pay to Surf) Sites

Let’s take a closer look at the PTC (Pay to Click) Advertising sites. Basically, you sign up and spend time looking at ads (and clicking them) to get paid. Most times, there is a minimum time stipulation (ie., you must view the ad for at least 30 seconds, or you won’t be paid for it), and the amount of money you make per click is miniscule. Most of these sites have an affiliate program attached to them, whereby if people sign up “under you,” you’ll get a bit from each ad they click, so if you have a passion for marketing, you may be able to eke out some level of income from that, but bear in mind that this is a soul crushingly boring way of making money, so you can count on losing affiliates nearly as quickly as you gain them. While possible to make some income with these types of sites, unless you keep the marketing pressure on, it won’t do much.

Slightly better are the PTS (Pay to Surf) sites. The gimmick here is that you install a toolbar, which displays ads as you surf. The more time you surf, the more money you make. Some more innovative of these companies set your pay on a sliding scale and require you to complete “offers” on their site to see better results. These are fine, so long as you only go after the free, or “free trial” offers, and stay organized enough to know when to cancel before getting charged. These sites also use affiliate programs, and again, you get a little extra for the time your affiliates spend surfing. You’ll never make a mint at this, but the toolbar is fairly innocuous, and if you market for affiliates, you won’t lose them nearly as quickly as you tend to with PTC sites. Again, the trick here lies in continuous, sustained marketing to gain affiliates. With persistence, you can typically make enough to pay for your ‘net access and put gas in your car, making this a fair part time consideration, and a decent way of earning extra money
